To address this issue of Technical Manpower shortage and to usher into a new era of Industrial Development comparable to International Standards, the Punjab Government constitued Punjab Technical University (PTU) in 1997 by an act of State Legislative.The University was entrusted with the responsibility of developing the new the generation of technical manpower that can spearhead the industrial development of the State.

Punjab Technical University has been formed to be the grooming ground for the future Engineers, Managers and Researchers. As of today, PTU affiliates 220 Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Hotel Managemet and Architecture Colleges in the State that are approved by All India Council of Technical Education(AICTE). PTU understands that restricting technical education to its campuses only will not serve its objective of creating a knowledge rich society.It has fimly understood that latest technical education has to be spread to the general masses. This is how the Distance Education Programme(DEP) of the Punjab Technical University conceived.

The objective of the programme is to impart affordable, relevant, skill-based & remunerative Technical Education to the masses of the country.
