Its rulers were Chandel Rajputs who came to the plains from Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh. They were descendants of the Chandel dynasty whose empire extended over the entire Central India (Yamuna to Narmada) from 800 to 1182 A.D before being overthrown by Prithviraj Chauhan. They built the famous Khajuraho temples. Legendary Alah-Udal belonged to the family.
